Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Traffic switch for Maroochydore Road upgrade

Traffic will be switched onto a newly completed stretch of Maroochydore Road tomorrow, signalling the next step in completing the $90 million road upgrade.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the changed traffic conditions would take effect from tomorrow (7 November), weather permitting, affecting Maroochydore Road between Pike Street, Stark and Sandalwood lanes.

"This traffic switch will allow traffic to travel on the newly constructed eastbound lanes so that work at the Stark and Sandalwood lanes interchange can continue," Mr Pitt said.

"The existing Maroochydore Road will be temporarily closed near Eudlo Creek to allow the road to link to the new interchange.

"These changes are necessary to let us get on with completing the job so everyone can enjoy a safer road by the end of the year.”

Local traffic entering Maroochydore Road between Pike Street, Stark and Sandalwood lanes will be diverted to the Pike Street interchange to access the new carriageway.

Mr Pitt said between 19,000 and 26,300 vehicles travelled on Maroochydore Road each day and the switch would allow traffic to continue travelling in both directions at all times.

“While these traffic changes are in place, the speed limit on the new road will be 60 kilometres an hour,” he said.

“Motorists are urged to slow down, drive to the changed conditions and observe signage.”

The Maroochydore Road upgrade includes interchanges at Sandalwood and Stark lanes, a bridge over Eudlo Creek and an overpass over Titree Road. Work on the upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of 2008, weather permitting.
