Mackay young people have a say in council’s youth policy
More than 80 young Queenslanders are expected at a youth symposium at Halliday Bay this week to provide input and advice on the Mackay Regional Council’s youth policies.
Representing Communities and Youth Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr, Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister and local Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin MP said the three-day Take Me Seriously (2) Youth Symposium’ kicks off this Friday (November 7) at the Halliday Bay Resort.
“First and foremost, this symposium will give local young people an opportunity to air their thoughts and opinions on issues important to them, such as youth violence, self esteem, youth-focused activities and entertainment, and future challenges such as employment,” Mr Mulherin said.
“While they will be encouraged to put forward ideas, they will also be involved in developing possible solutions, as well as network with government and community decision-makers.
“The symposium will also see the development of youth-led actions teams, where young people are able to put their ideas into action.”
As part of the symposium, Mr Mulherin will join a panel discussion about how young people can better connect with government and community representatives.
Open to young people aged 12 to 25 years old, Minister Nelson-Carr said the symposium was a joint initiative between the Department of Communities and Mackay Regional Council.
“Earlier this year, I announced that the council had secured a $40 000 grant to run youth engagement activities over two years – including this symposium,” Minister Nelson-Carr said.
“I’m really pleased to be supporting this youth forum which builds on the success of the first ‘Take Me Seriously Youth Symposium’ in 2002 which helped develop youth policies for the shires of Sarina and Mirani.”
The Mackay Regional Council was one of 10 organisations statewide to receive a youth engagement grant.
“This funding gives young Queenslanders a voice,” Minister Nelson-Carr said.
“Involving young people in the decision-making process gives them a sense of belonging in their community and encourages them to raise their voices on matters of concern to them.
“It’s now up to each community to listen and act to ensure they are meeting the needs of local young people.”
