Wondall Heights State School wins for its Smart Moves
Students at a Brisbane Bayside school have won a $12,000 tree planting day and a visit from rugby league legend Shane Webcke for a film they produced about physical activity.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said Year 6 students at Wondall Heights State School in Manly West have won a Suncorp Sunwise Smart Moves Challenge encouragement award for their film Better Health Better Life.
“The Suncorp Sunwise Smart Moves Challenge has encouraged students to become active and healthy by recognising outstanding examples of school-based physical activities,” Mr Welford said.
“The Challenge supports our Government’s Toward Q2 target to cut obesity and unsafe sun exposure by one third by 2020 and our vision for a healthier Queensland.
“Students across Queensland were asked to make a 90-second film on the physical activity they participate in with their class, team or friends to show how they are embracing Smart Moves.”
Mr Welford said the Smart Moves initiative requires state school students to participate in at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity in primary school and a minimum of two hours a week in secondary school.
“Our Government introduced Smart Moves to ensure state school students from Prep to Year 12 establish healthy habits to last a lifetime,” he said.
“The Wondall Heights State School entry in the Suncorp Sunwise Smart Moves Challenge was recognised as an excellent example of what Smart Moves is about.
“The hard work, enthusiasm and energy of the Year 6 students has secured an impressive $12,000 tree planting day for the school.
“This includes a shade audit by award-winning architect John Greenwood and the planting of trees near the school oval, tennis court and basketball court.
“Rugby league legend and Suncorp Sunwise Smart Moves Ambassador Shane Webcke visited the school today and helped with the planting of these shade trees.”
Mr Webcke said the Smart Moves challenge was a fantastic initiative that encouraged kids to stay active and healthy.
“It also educates kids on the importance of sun safety when participating in outdoor activities, a vital part of exercise that we can all too easily forget,” Mr Webcke said.
Wondall Heights State School principal Roberta Barbe said the students had enjoyed making the film and were grateful to have received the encouragement award.
“This has been a wonderful achievement for the school and the students are very proud of the legacy they will leave. We could not have hoped for a more suitable prize,” Ms Barbe said.
