Queensland Schoolgirl makes Idol Top Five

Education, Training and Arts Minister Rod Welford today congratulated Redcliffe State High School student Chrislyn Hamilton for reaching the Top Five of Australian Idol.

“Chrislyn, 17, was voted off the popular TV show last night after making it to the Top Five last week and becoming the last female contestant in the competition,” Mr Welford said.

“What a great achievement to be the last female standing out of the 35,000 hopefuls who auditioned for Idol this year.

“It is really gratifying to see students of Chrislyn’s calibre confidently showcasing their talents to the nation.

“I congratulate Chrislyn on her achievements and I wish her the best of luck for her future career.

“I believe Chrislyn has remarkable potential to achieve great things in the music industry, if she decides to continue down that career path.”

Mr Welford said the Department of Education, Training and the Arts supported Queensland’s vision as a place where artistic and cultural pursuits were encouraged.

“Chrislyn’s remarkable talent has been nurtured through the creative arts program at her school,” he said.

“Queensland state schools encourage students to participate in the arts because there’s a growing body of Australian and international research that shows those who do participate perform better academically and have improved life skills.

“That is why I have declared 2009 the Year of Creativity in Queensland State Schools. During the year students will be encouraged to develop their creative skills in all aspects of their learning.

“Students must develop the ability to take knowledge and apply it in creative and innovative ways to find the solution to issues and challenges they face.

“Schools will focus on the development of creativity across all areas of the curriculum, from science, mathematics, technology, humanities to the arts.”
