Kenmore Bypass planning options released
The Kenmore Bypass Planning Study has moved to a new stage, with the Queensland Government releasing planning options for a potential bypass.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the planning options had been developed after consultation with the community about the issues and opportunities associated with a potential Kenmore Bypass.
“The planning study is investigating a potential Kenmore Bypass as a possible way to address urban traffic growth on Moggill Road in the Kenmore area,” Mr Pitt said.
“The draft planning options have been released as part of the second stage of the three-stage Kenmore Bypass Planning Study, scheduled for completion next year.
“However, I must reiterate that no decision has been made on whether a bypass will be built.
“I understand that there are strong opinions within the community both for and against a possible bypass, so this planning study is vital to ensure that all the issues are fleshed out before any decision is made.”
The potential Kenmore Bypass is a three-kilometre preserved transport corridor between Moggill Road at Pullenvale and the Centenary Motorway at Fig Tree Pocket.
Mr Pitt said the community was invited to get involved and provide feedback on the options.
"Main Roads has undertaken extensive technical and environmental investigations to ensure the options presented not only best reflect the needs of the community, but are also technically and economically feasible,” he said.
"The bypass planning is for a four-lane, free-flowing road with recreational bikeways and pedestrian paths, as well as on-road commuter cycle lanes.
"The planning options have been designed to minimise the impacts on surrounding properties, particularly in terms of noise, property resumptions and visual amenity."
Mr Pitt said one of the key principles in developing the options was the desire to use the existing preserved transport corridor where possible.
“The Bligh Government is determined to plan for the future and this study is an important part of that approach,” he said.
"The bypass corridor has been preserved by the State Government since the late 1970s.
"The planning options have been designed to follow the alignment of the existing corridor and primarily focus on interchanges and how a Kenmore Bypass would connect with the existing road network.
“Under the options developed in stage two, an estimated 85 properties could be required for full or partial resumption, subject to further detailed investigations.
“This number is significantly less than the 163 property resumptions from the previous six options outlined in a 2007 pre-feasibility report.”
Mr Pitt said he encouraged the community to once again visit the staffed public displays to talk to members of the project team and provide feedback on the options.
"We hope the community continues to provide Main Roads with valuable feedback to ensure that any preferred option developed for the bypass is one that delivers the best possible outcome," he said.
"The public comment period for stage two is from 6 November to 12 December 2008 and during this time, Main Roads will hold public displays at Kenmore Village, Indooroopilly Shopping Town and Bellbowrie Shopping Centre.”
Main Roads is also distributing a newsletter to residents in the study area, detailing the bypass options and ways the community can get involved and provide feedback.
Following the close of the stage two public comment period, Main Roads will use the feedback received, along with further technical investigations, to develop a preferred option for a possible Kenmore Bypass. The preferred option will be released in early-mid 2009.
