Murweh Shire Council receives $2.47 million in disaster funding

Murweh Shire Council will receive more than $2.47 million in funding to repair damage that occurred to its road network as a result of monsoonal flooding throughout Queensland during January 2008.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said floodwaters had caused significant subsidence, resulting in damage to the council’s road infrastructure.

“The monsoonal flooding that occurred across many parts of Queensland has caused considerable damage to the Murweh Shire Council local road network,” Mr Pitt said.

“It’s vital that communities have the resources to ensure their timely repair.

“The reliance by regional communities on local infrastructure means that this type of damage has the potential to severely impact the regions businesses and livelihoods.”

Mr Pitt said some of the major works undertaken included: Old Charleville Road ($114,899 worth of repairs); Bradley’s Gully Road ($118,000); Mount Tabor ($88,612); Middle Creek Road ($59,285) and Newholme Road ($59,520).

“This natural disaster would have severely disadvantaged ratepayers if Murweh Shire Council was required to cover this financial burden,” Mr Pitt said.

“As a result, the State and Commonwealth governments have contributed $2,476,835, with the shire council contributing $50,000 towards the repair work.”

Mr Pitt said the funding was provided through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program, a joint State and Commonwealth initiative.
