Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Bligh Government opens new two fire stations at Malanda and Yungaburra
Emergency Services Minister, Neil Roberts will visit the Tablelands tomorrow to open two new fire stations in Malanda and Yungaburra.
Mr Roberts said the construction of the two new stations worth around $670,000 each was evidence the Bligh Government was committed to dealing with population growth in the far north region.
"The Bligh Government made a commitment to demolish both old stations and replace them with modern facilities to cater for current and future needs," Mr Roberts said.
"Each of the new facilities consist of two engine bays, a training room, office space, breathing apparatus recommissioning areas, unisex and disability bathrooms, kitchenette, breakout areas and environmentally approved, external wash down areas," he said.
"Particular attention has also been paid in the planning of this facility ensuring that it complements the towns' historical character."
Mr Roberts praised the skill and commitment of the firefighters.
"The 12 firefighters who staff each of these stations are among a contingent of just over 2,000 auxiliary firefighters throughout the state who attend more than 15,000 incidents every year," he said.
"They provide reassurance to the Malanda and Yungaburra communities that, in the event of an emergency, be it a road crash, house fire or bushfire, there is a team of trained firefighters in their own backyard who will act quickly and professionally."
"I’d also like to acknowledge the support of the families of the firefighters. Their sacrifice is ever bit as important as the efforts of the crews.
"This job requires its staff to be called away from their families after work, during dinner and in the middle of the night. Without the support of family and close friends, the auxiliary service at Yungaburra and Malanda would not be of such a professional standard."
Mr Roberts said community recognition and assistance has also helped boost the standard of firefighting services in the area.
"Support from community groups like the Malanda Dairy Farmer's who housed the Malanda Fire truck while construction was taking place and the Yungaburra Lioness Club who continually assist with fundraising and general station activities is vital to ensuring that the people in these areas have the best services on offer."
