Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
Funding helps to build innovative regional arts and culture
The Bligh Government today announced funding of more than $2.26 million for arts and cultural activities across regional Queensland.
Arts Minister Rod Welford said 55 regional councils have put their hand up for Queensland Government funding through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) program.
“RADF is a unique partnership between State and Local Government, which allows participating councils to shape arts and cultural priorities in their own community,” Mr Welford said.
“RADF supports the Bligh Government’s strong commitment to innovative arts and culture in regional Queensland and acknowledges the vital role of the arts in building sustainable and liveable communities.
“Our Government has earmarked $2.26 million in RADF funding for arts and cultural activities in regional Queensland in 2008-09 with $2.05 allocated directly to local Councils in the RADF program.
“This is supported by local Councils who contribute another $1.41 million.”
Mr Welford said this year’s RADF process used a funding model developed in direct response to feedback from Council officers.
“The RADF process, in place for 17 years and a proven success, was altered this year to accommodate council amalgamations during a transitional period,” he said.
“As a result, in 2008-09, the balance of RADF funding will go towards state-wide RADF initiatives including training programs, regional service delivery and the RADF conference in 2009.
“RADF remains a highly-valued resource for communities, enabling the development of quality art and supporting locally-determined arts priorities.”
RADF helps to deliver on the priorities outlined in the Queensland Arts Industry Sector Plan, including supporting regionally based artists and arts organisations, developing audiences and promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
