Two bursaries awarded to women in local government

The Queensland Government has announced the inaugural recipients of the Women in Local Government Professional Development Bursary, designed to help women working for their communities in local government.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt congratulated the two women and acknowledged their commitment to improving their own skills, sharing knowledge with colleagues, and making a difference in their communities.

He made the announcement today after hosting a Women in Government breakfast in Cairns as part of the regional sitting of Parliament.

“The $4500 bursary can be used towards offsetting the cost of professional development activities that the recipient may wish to undertake,” Mr Pitt said.

“The quality of applications received was outstanding and acknowledges the great work being undertaken by women in local government right around the state.”

Mr Pitt said the first was Catherine Watkins.

“Catherine is currently the finance manager at the Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council and she is planning on doing a Master of Professional Accounting through James Cook University in Cairns, commencing in February next year,” he said.

“The second recipient is Jennifer Sanders, who is currently a bonding officer at Logan City Council and is enrolled in the LGAQ Diploma of Local Government (Planning) course. Jennifer plans to use the bursary to start her Graduate Certificate in Planning through Curtin University, and hopes to complete a masters program in 2010.

“Both women are shining examples of the exemplary commitment and positive attitude that are present in our local governments today.”

The bursary creates opportunities for women who are either working in a local government environment, or are in an elected local government position. The Women in Local Government Professional Development Bursary is provided each year and nominations will open again in July 2009.
