Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Funding set to help Toowoomba's bridges

Maintaining bridges in the Toowoomba region will be the focus of a new $1.35 million contract awarded to Main Roads’ construction arm, RoadTek.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the contract would cover routine bridge maintenance on various state-controlled roads, as well as parts of the federal AusLink network across the Toowoomba region.

“Main Roads has provided $1.25 million towards maintaining bridges in the region, with the Federal Government providing an extra $100,000 through its AusLink program,” Mr Pitt said.

“These works are part of a Main Roads’ strategy to maintain and enhance the safety and efficiency of state-controlled roads in the Toowoomba region.

"Ongoing maintenance of highways and road corridors is a key priority for Main Roads, with bridges forming a vital component of our road network.

"Conducting preventative maintenance work helps Main Roads conserve resources in the longer term, by ensuring any bridge conditions are addressed before they have the potential to become more urgent.

“Regular inspections and routine maintenance of the bridge structures help to keep traffic flowing, minimising disruption and ensuring travellers arrive at their destinations safely and efficiently."

Mr Pitt said the contract would cover bridges in the Toowoomba, Dalby, Lockyer Valley, South Burnett and Somerset regional council areas.

"Using local workforces to carry out works, as well as tapping into local knowledge, will be of great benefit to the bridge maintenance program,” he said.

"Local people working in their respective local areas are paramount for our success in keeping the road network maintained within the budget available.”

The bridge maintenance works are expected to be completed in mid-2009, weather permitting.
