Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Carnarvon Highway upgrade near Injune close to completion
Motorists travelling along the Carnarvon Highway near Injune will soon experience a safer and smoother journey, with road widening works nearing completion.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the work underway along the Injune-Rolleston Road section, north of Injune, was in its final stages.
"This $2.6 million road widening project is back on track following some initial delays from rain earlier this year," Mr Pitt said.
"The Carnarvon Highway forms an important north-south freight and tourist route in southern Queensland.
"When completed, this project will deliver a wider road to help improve safety for all motorists, and especially for Type 1 road trains and caravans along this route.
"These works are part of a long-term strategy aimed at upgrading and widening sections of the highway north of Injune, to maintain a safe and efficient highway well into the future.”
The intersection of Westgrove Road and the Carnarvon Highway is also being upgraded as part of the project.
Mr Pitt reminded motorists to watch their speed through roadwork sites and obey instructions from traffic controllers.
“Some vehicles have been speeding through the roadworks site at Injune,” he said.
"This is a major highway and it is understandable people wish to reach their destination quickly, however it is vital our roadworkers and other road users remain safe.
"This site is under the management of traffic controllers and traffic lights. Some sections will be reduced to a speed limit of 40km/h, with delays of up to 15 minutes expected.
"Main Roads appreciates the community's patience and understanding to slow down and drive to conditions until the job is completed."
The project is expected to be completed by late November 2008, weather permitting.
