Undercover students protected by Manunda TAFE campus project

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford today marked the start of construction on a new entrance to the Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE campus.

Mr Welford said the $500,000 project would include a new entry from Newton Street at the Manunda campus and a covered walkway.

“Students will now be able to cross the entire campus undercover which is great news for the upcoming wet season, “ Mr Welford said.

“Students making their way across to the eastern side of the campus will no longer get soaked in the tropical deluges.

“Significantly the covered walkway will also protect the students from sun exposure.

“The entrance will also provide improved student access to TAFE’s admissions centre, library, student services and flexible learning centre.

“The project also includes a dual access staircase, new undercover seating and 9m x 15m undercover area at H block,” Mr Welford said.

“The project compliments a $29 million investment in trades training at the Cairns TAFE campus over the next two years, which will include new flexible training workshops for the horticulture, construction, automotive and engineering areas.

“The new entry structure is part of the $1 billion state-wide investment in TAFE infrastructure under the State Government’s Queensland Skills Plan.

“The Bligh Government is building tomorrow’s Queensland today.

“We’re planning for and managing growth by spending $1.6 million every hour of every day to build and rebuild our infrastructure.”
