WESTERN CORRIDOR RECYCLED WATER PROJECT OPEN DAY

A community open day will be held to celebrate the completion of the next stage of the Western Corridor Recycled Water Project next Sunday, the second of November.

Deputy Premier Paul Lucas said the celebration will be held at the Luggage Point Advanced Water Treatment Plant, which will is now receiving its finishing touches along with the Gibson Island plant.

"This is a chance for the people of South East Queensland to say thankyou to the workers who’ve built the Southern Hemisphere’s largest water recycling scheme," said the Deputy Premier.

"It has taken more than six million hours but the workers have completed a task that many thought impossible.

"The Western Corridor Recycled Water Project will be able to produce more than 140 million litres of water each day in a drought, enough water for more than 820,000 people under Target 170.

"This is a project we should all be very proud of, it puts South East Queensland on the front foot to cope with climate change and population growth.

"This open day will give people the chance to see the technology behind producing the water, to ask questions, visit displays, hear from international specialists involved in the project and be entertained by family activities.

"The project has already eased the pressure on our drinking water supplies, having delivered more than nine billion litres of water to Tarong and Swanbank power stations since August 2007."

Purified recycled water is undergoing a stringent verification process, overseen by an independent expert panel, to ensure the water quality meets the high standard demanded by all regulations and guidelines.

Following the rigorous testing and approval regime, purified recycled water will be released into Wivenhoe Dam for the first time in February/March next year.

Informative presentations, interactive displays and fun family activities including a community barbecue, live bands, jumping castle, face painting and baby animal farm.

Luggage Point Advanced Water Treatment Plant is located at 153 Main Beach Road, Myrtletown, about 15km from the Brisbane CBD.
