Volunteers head to the Gabba as Qld says ‘thanks’

Embargoed to Sunday October 26

Emergency Services volunteers will be donning their baggy greens today as they head to The Gabba for the annual 2008 Volunteer’s Cricket Day.

Minister for Emergency Services Neil Roberts said the free day out for volunteers and their families is a small thank you for the massive contribution they make to the community.

"Volunteers really are the glue that holds our society together," he said.

"The Department of Emergency Services has almost 74,000 volunteers, more than any other government organisation, and I have seen first hand time and time again the wonderful work these people do for their communities.

"From protecting houses during bushfires to assisting families after a storm or providing emergency first aid response when people need it most, emergency volunteers are always there to help others."

Now in it's eighth year, the volunteer cricket day is expected to draw 20,000 people from all around the state to enjoy the clash between the Queensland Bulls and the Victorian Bushrangers as part of the Ford Ranger Cup.

CEO of Volunteering Queensland Di Morgan said the day is always enjoyed by all who attend.

"What better way is there to say thank you than by giving something back to the families who give us all so much," she said.

"Enjoying some of the best sunshine and sport Queensland has to offer with your family, is a perfect day out and is always well received by those who attend."
