The Honourable Warren Pitt

New Isabella State School supervised crossing opened

A new supervised school crossing to safeguard the lives of 320 students at Isabella State School in Cairns was officially opened today.

Main Roads Minister and Member for Mulgrave Warren Pitt said the crossing in Walker Road would be supervised by school crossing supervisors every school day.

“This new supervised crossing is an important part of the Queensland Government’s commitment to road safety – especially where children are concerned,” Mr Pitt said.

“There is nothing more important than the safety of our kids.

“The government recognises that it has a responsibility to protect children as they move to and from school, and this service is evidence of that commitment.

“However, the responsibility doesn’t only rest with government.

“Everyone who drives past a school or around school precincts must be very careful at all times because children are unpredictable.

“It’s also very important that parents and carers teach their children the dangers of crossing the road and how important it is to obey school crossing supervisors,” he said.

Mr Pitt said the provision of supervised school crossings was a partnership between the Queensland Government, which provides and trains the supervisors, the local council, which provides the infrastructure, and the school community.

“During almost 25 years since the scheme’s introduction, there have been no fatal injuries to students using supervised crossings in Queensland,” he said.

“There are now 1791 supervisors caring for children at 1164 supervised crossings at 639 schools across the State.

“Every school day, at least 30,000 students use supervised crossings across Queensland, and at least 176,500 vehicles pass through these crossings each day.

“Our school crossing supervisors have a wonderful tradition of protecting Queensland’s most important asset – our children – and we are all very grateful to them for that,” he said.

Mr Pitt urged drivers to watch out for the new supervised crossing when driving along Walker Road and to always be careful when driving near schools.
