Designs for new Calliope Range crossing on track

Design work on a new $70 million crossing of the Calliope Range in Central Queensland is on schedule to be completed by the end of the year.

Located 50 kilometres west of Calliope on the Dawson Highway, the project spans the boundary of Banana Shire and Gladstone Regional Council.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the Calliope Range project would contribute to the region’s economy as well as improve safety on the region’s roads.

“This new crossing will ensure the highway can cater for larger vehicles, particularly those involved in the haulage of freight and materials,” Mr Pitt said.

“The project will provide a high speed link between the port and industrial facilities at Gladstone, established agricultural areas of the Callide and Dawson Valleys and the developing Bowen Basin and Surat Basin coalfields.”

Mr Pitt said the upgrade project will provide for a five kilometre realignment slightly to the north of the existing range crossing.

"The new full-width bitumen sealed road will provide a safer, more freight efficient environment to replace the current highway bottleneck,” he said.

“This is a significant project for Central Queensland, and shows the Queensland Government’s commitment to improve safety and provide better regional roads across Queensland.”

Tenders for the start of construction are expected to be called for in early 2009.
