Carpentaria Shire Council receives $7.2 million in disaster funding

Carpentaria Shire Council will receive more than $7.2 million in funding to repair its damaged road network that occurred as the result of flooding in January 2008.

Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan said the council’s road network had received significant damage as a result of monsoonal floodwaters undermining road structures.

“The monsoonal flooding that occurred in January has caused a lot of damage across Queensland,” Mrs Kiernan said.

“The reliance on local roads by regional communities means that this damage has a great impact on the area’s accessibility and transport.”

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said the State and Commonwealth governments had contributed $7,256,075 in disaster funding with the shire council contributing $50,000 towards the repair work.

“Ratepayers would have been considerably disadvantaged by the financial burden of this natural disaster if Carpentaria Shire Council had been required to foot the bill,” Mr Pitt said.

The funding was provided through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program, a joint State and Commonwealth initiative.
