Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Tips for summer savings on power bills
With temperatures starting to rise and people turning to air conditioners to cool down, Queenslanders are being encouraged to think smart to save money.
Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said while keeping cool could be expensive, with a little smart thinking, people could save on energy costs without sacrificing comfort.
“With temperatures rising as we head into summer, more people are switching on their air conditioners. This can lead to a quick jump in energy bills over the summer months,” Mr Wilson said.
“Air conditioners and pool filters can chew up large amounts of electricity and that can add significantly to a household’s quarterly power bill.”
Ergon Energy and Energex are urging their customers to keep the use of air conditioners and pool filters to an efficient and cost-effective minimum.
“Simple tips like choosing the right-size air conditioner, closing curtains and blinds, doors and windows, using the recirculation setting, cleaning filters and putting in home insulation can all help keep a home cool.
“All of those measures can make a significant difference to electricity bills,” Mr Wilson said.
Ergon Energy customers in regional Queensland should also consider various tariff options that are available to them for both air conditioning and pool filters.
Connecting pool filtering equipment to a cheaper tariff could reduce operating costs by half, but households have to agree to operate the pool filter during the hours agreed upon with Ergon Energy.
“Households should also make sure they have the right size filter for their pool and use it correctly to keep the water clean.
“Timers on filters should be checked regularly to make sure they are working properly,” he said.
Minister Wilson said smart thinking could help customers save energy and save money at the same time.
