SES storm Southbank for season launch

EMBARGOED UNTIL 10AM SUNDAY OCTOBER 19, 2008

SES members across Brisbane converged on Streets Beach at Southbank this morning, not for a search or a clean up, but to help launch the 2008 storm season campaign.

Minister for Emergency Services Neil Roberts said a few storms ahead of the traditional start to the season have kept the ‘orange angels’ busy.

“Just this week we had several SES members out in force assisting residents with the cleanup after a severe storm swept through the south east,” he said.

“Of course the 6,400 SES volunteers we have around the state are always ready to help with any emergency but it also helps for families to be prepared themselves.

“Storms can be quite frightening for people who aren’t prepared or well equipped. The aim of today’s launch is to get people thinking about storm safety and storm preparation to ensure that no Queensland family gets caught out.

Storm season was kicked off with the Minister, SES volunteers and the major sponsor of the SES, NRMA Insurance, handing out glove packs to assist people with the preparation of their properties.

“One of the easiest things you can do is make sure your property is clean and tidy; put away loose items including outdoor furniture, children's toys and gardening equipment,” Minister Roberts said.

“Bring your pets indoors and try and keep cars and boats undercover to prevent damage.

“Close all external doors and listen to your radio and keep an eye on the BOM website for weather updates (http://www.bom.gov.au).

“Of course everyone should avoid playing in or driving through flooded causeways.”

Minister Roberts said the SES are well equipped to help with requests for assistance at any time.

“In the past year, more than 22,000 calls have been made to 132 500 from residents requiring assistance from the SES,” he said,

“This assistance has ranged from tarping roofs, providing temporary repairs to homes and helping with flooded properties when major storm events occurred.

“SES volunteers receive extensive training and are provided with all the equipment they need from both the State Government and also the major sponsor of the SES, NRMA Insurance.”

NRMA Insurance Queensland State Manager Brett Robinson said the SES and NRMA work hand in hand in times of emergency.

“On average, one in four of our home claims in the region is related to storm damage, so we think it’s important we help the community be prepared and be really nimble in helping them when a storm strikes.

“We and the SES both recognise, the quicker residents get the right help, the quicker communities can get back on their feet.”
