Townsville businesses win recognition for export success

Premier Anna Bligh has praised Townsville as one of Queensland’s most productive areas for export businesses following the success of a number of local competitors in the race for the State’s top exporting honours.

Ms Bligh said that Townsville-based export businesses NPM Group, Digital Dimensions Australia, BHP Billiton Cannington and Sun Metals had all achieved significant exporting success in the past year, and had received recognition in the list of winners and finalists in the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards announced tonight (16 October).

“Townsville’s NPM Group has been named Queensland’s Regional Exporter of the Year for 2008,” Ms Bligh said.

“NPM was also named as a finalist in the Large Services category,” she said.

“NPM manufacture modular housing for the Australian and export markets, and provide building project management services for large construction projects, such as resort overseas developments.

“The company has now been responsible for the successful completion of projects to a value of over $450 million including heavy construction projects throughout the Pacific region and is regarded as the premier construction company in Fiji.

“The company has been so successful that NPM has more work offers than they can take advantage of, and a full order book for projects for the next 2 years,” Ms Bligh said

“Digital Dimensions produces natural history documentaries and other factual television programming which brings in export dollars and helps to highlight our State’s unique resources, amazing animals, great science, quirky researchers and stunning natural beauty overseas.

“Digital Dimensions has experienced huge growth in recent years after securing the company’s two biggest projects including a 2 hour HD documentary special ‘Mysteries of the Shark Coast’ and ‘Creature Connections’, a quirky series of twenty, half hour programs on the Barrier Reef as a co-production with BBC Children.

“Exporting contributed 86% of Digital Dimensions’ revenue in 2007/08, with markets in Europe, the UK, Japan, the Asia Pacific region, USA and the Middle East,” she said.

The Premier also congratulated BHP Billiton Cannington and Sun Metals which were both named as finalists in the Minerals and Energy award category won this year by Rockhampton’s Queensland Magnesia Pty Ltd.

Minister for Trade, John Mickel congratulated the winners on their contribution to the region “These export companies are providing a significant number of jobs for Townsville, and contributing significantly to the region’s valuable mining and minerals industries as well as its overall culture and economy.

“I congratulate Townsville, and especially these four successful local exporting businesses on their achievement in the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards, and encourage all local firms to investigate the benefits of exporting to support their business growth,” Mr Mickel said.
