Gold Coast features at 2008 Premier of Qld Export Awards
Premier Anna Bligh has praised the Gold Coast as one of Queensland’s most productive and successful exporting regions following the success of local businesses competing for the State’s top exporting honours.
Ms Bligh said that Gold Coast export businesses Magic Millions Sales, Burchill VDM, Envirosax and Superior Jetties had all achieved significant exporting success in the past year, and had received recognition in the list of winners and finalists in the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards announced tonight (16 October).
“Magic Millions Sales has again received an Export Award winner’s trophy in the Sports, Events and Tourism category, following on from their 2007 success. The company will now progress through to the national awards,” Ms Bligh said.
“Magic Millions is Australia’s premium thoroughbred horse auctioneering, sales and events hosting company, achieving $40 million in export sales in 2007/08.
“The company conducts over twenty auctions each year both in Australia and overseas, but is best known for its annual events, the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Sales & Racing Carnival held in January, and the Magic Millions National Sales each June. Both events attract thousands of people to the Gold Coast.
“The Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Carnival has now firmly established itself as one of the country's leading events, generating massive revenue and creating enormous exposure to the local region and Queensland.
“Magic Millions export markets include South Africa, the UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the UAE, Iran, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Macau, the Philippines, Korea and the USA.
“Just this week a delegation of breeding and training experts from Magic Millions Sales attended a Magic Millions sponsored race day in Hong Kong. The group has been in Macau to address Hong Kong’s racing industry in the production of thoroughbreds and sales.
“On behalf of Queenslanders, I wish Magic Millions every success as the company moves on to compete in the national export awards again in 2008.
The Premier also congratulated Gold Coast businesses Burchill VDM, Envirosax and Superior Jetties who were named as finalists in the Large Services, Emerging Exporter and Regional Exporter categories respectively.
“Burchill VDM has been involved in the planning and engineering of many of the Gold Coast’s signature developments and has been undertaking civil engineering and planning for projects in China, India, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Japan, Fiji, and the UAE in recent years.
“Envirosax exports a range of design-led, eco-friendly reusable shopping bags, filling a worldwide niche for a more aesthetically pleasing product, while spreading the overall message of choosing reusable over single-use plastic bags. Their products are supported by environmentalists and fashionistas across the globe, and they have experienced very strong growth since they started exporting to Canada in 2006.
“Superior Jetties manufactures a variety of top quality marine berthing systems for commercial marinas including concrete pontoons, modular berths, water based boardwalks, timber jetties and boat lifts, and this year experienced major export growth in supplying export markets in India, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Seychelles and the Middle East.
Demonstrating the Gold Coast’s export diversity, Premier Bligh also praised the winner of the Premier’s Special Award for 2008, exciting Queensland pop group, Operator Please.
“In 2007 Operator Please won the Australia Record Industry Association award for Best Breakthrough Artist – Single, for their track titled Just a Song About Ping Pong.
“In November 2007 they recorded and released their debut album titled Yes Yes Vindictive, and in just over a week it reached number 29 on the ARIA charts. The album was a major success in Australia and generated interest for the band internationally.” Said Ms Bligh
“The album was then released and distributed with huge success in the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, France and Germany.
“Since this time, Operator Please has been targeting and touring extensively their three key export markets – United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan.
“These companies are all providing a significant number of jobs for the Gold Coast, and contributing to the Gold Coast’s environment, architecture, culture and economy.
“I congratulate the Gold Coast, and especially these five successful local exporting businesses on their achievement in the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards, and encourage all local firms to investigate the benefits of exporting to support their business growth,” Ms Bligh said.
