Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Statement from Communities Minister – Juvenile Detention
“A youth offender has spent five extra weeks in detention.
While this may be the first time an administrative error of this kind has occurred in this way, it should not have occurred and I want to make sure it does not happen again.
The department has reviewed its procedures and changed pre-sentencing reports as a result to make sure the problem is solved.
I’ve also requested my Director-General Linda Apelt ensure an independent external review into the case is conducted to identify where the processes went wrong and what other action may be required.
“It’s ludicrous for the Opposition to suggest a complete review is needed – they didn’t even bother to make a submission to the recent Juvenile Justice Act review.”
