New children’s activity centre a winner for New Mapoon: Minister

A popular children’s activity service in New Mapoon has moved to bigger and better premises, to provide the best possible learning and development opportunities for local children.

Communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today officially opened the New Mapoon Children’s Activity Centre during a visit to the Northern Peninsula Area and Torres Strait.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the Department of Communities provided almost $200,000 towards the building cost and the Australian Government contributed $100,000.

She said the centre offered high-quality after-school hours and vacation care for local children and organised playgroup sessions for very young members of the community and their parents.

“The Nai-Beguta Agama Aboriginal Corporation had been providing children's activities for the New Mapoon community since the early 1990s, in buildings which had outlived their usefulness,” said the Minister.

“In the safe, caring environment of the new facility, parents are encouraged to develop friendships and share parenting skills while their young children play and learn together.

“Importantly too, greater stability and comfort is offered to staff and parents and their children in this wonderful new building.

“The centre meets all of the latest building code requirements, and can cater for up to 30 school-aged children at one time.”
