Concrete manufacturer sets the standard for eco-efficiency

A Queensland company has taken up the state government’s challenge to help improve environmental performance.

Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, Andrew McNamara today presented a $150,000 ecoBiz rebate to Wagners Concrete Pty Ltd, the first company in Australia to install a revolutionary waste reduction system.

The ecoBiz program is designed to help Queensland businesses adopt eco-efficient practices.

“Projects supported by ecoBiz significantly demonstrate their ability to reduce their water and energy consumption, and carbon and waste output,” Mr McNamara said.

“Wagners have definitely met the expectations of the ecoBiz program by installing Wastesaver, a waste reduction system at their Wacol site,” he said.

The site is the largest permanent pre-cast concrete yard in Queensland.

“The new system has the potential to save more than 33,000 litres of diesel, 2.4 million litres of water and 45 tonnes of green house gases each year.

“Wagners are leading the way in business by recognising that sustainable practises are not just good for the environment, but are also good for the bottom line.”

The Wastesaver system will reduce costs for the company by $300,000 per year.

Member for Inala, Annastacia Palaszczuk, congratulated Wagners on their efforts to become eco-efficient.

“It’s good to see a local company setting the standard for environmental performance,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“If this technology was adopted by all similar-sized concrete plants in Queensland, the annual water savings would add up to more than 26 million litres, and waste going to landfill would be reduced by 99,000 tonnes per year.”

Mr McNamara said the new system also removed the necessity to store large quantities of rejected and unused concrete on site.

“This means an overall improvement in health, safety and environmental performance.”
