Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Employment assistance for Noosa jobseekers

The Noosa Community Training Centre will assist 80 long-term unemployed people to pursue meaningful jobs over the coming 12 months.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Customised Case Management project will receive $63,360 from the State Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

“With unemployment at a low 3.6 per cent we need to encourage and assist people outside the workforce to pursue jobs in industries affected by labour and skills shortages,” Mr Mickel said.

“Supporting community organisations like the Noosa Community Training Centre means jobseekers can access their local knowledge and contacts to improve their chances of finding work in the future.

“There are employment opportunities in industries like tourism, hospitality, retail and aged care that unemployed and underemployed people can pursue through entry-level positions or further training.

“The State Government set out a vision for a strong and fair Queensland in Toward Q2 and through projects like this we can expand and extend our workforce to meet those goals.”

Noosa Community Training Centre Manager Glenda Lane said the Customised Case Management project will have rolling starts and offers a variety of assistance.

“Different people have different needs so as well as access to one-on-one assistance and group training sessions participants will also develop their own career plan which will include achievable goals for them to strive for,” Ms Lane said.

“Having the right attitude and motivation to find work is a big part of making a good impression on an employer, so this project addresses these topics as well as how to search for jobs or write a better resume.

“We’ll also bring in guest speakers from other organisations and agencies in the community who will provide more information on the different employment and training options available to participants.”

During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
