Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Philippines mission to drill for new market opportunities for Queensland mining businesses
Trade Queensland will lead a trade mission to the Philippines in November to support the State’s mining-related businesses as they identify and investigate first-hand the opportunities in this growing market for mining equipment, technology and services.
Minister for Trade John Mickel said that the trade mission would coincide with Mining Philippines 2008 (also incorporating Philippines Oil and Gas 2008), an event that will bring together the Philippines' major mining players in Manila from 13-16 November.
“As part of this mining equipment and services focused trade mission, Trade Queensland will organise a comprehensive two-day program prior to the trade show,” Mr Mickel said.
“The extended program will enable participants to identify and have tailor made individual business meetings with high level contacts and strategic clients including mining companies and supply chain businesses.
“The Philippines is known as one of the top five mineral-rich countries in the world, especially for gold, copper and nickel, with significant deposits of coal, silver and chromite.
‘The Philippines' Department of Natural Resources and the Environment estimated that $10 billion in foreign investment can be expected in the mining sector over the next four years.
“This will include major projects such as Xstrata’s Tampakan Project in Mindanao, which includes potential investment of $1 billion to have the project operational by 2010. In addition Leightons Asia is particularly active in the Philippines, recently securing two valuable contracts to operate local mines.
“I urge Queensland mining related businesses to take advantage of this chance to investigate the Philippines as a prime market for their products and services, now and in the future,” Mr Mickel said.
Trade Queensland’s Philippines mining trade mission will immediately follow another mining mission to China to attend the China Coal Expo and the China Mining Conference & Exhibition from 3 to 13 November.
Queensland businesses wishing to attend either or both of the November mining trade missions to Asia, or to receive further information, can contact Trade Queensland on 3224 4035 or visit www.export.qld.gov.au
