The Honourable Warren Pitt

Work has started on a $6.3 million upgrade of the Mooloolaba Road/Dixon Road intersection to improve safety and efficiency for motorists in Buderim.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the existing intersection would be upgraded to a two-lane roundabout to better cater to traffic volumes.

"This upgrade is designed to reduce current congestion at the intersection and to accommodate future traffic growth in the area," Mr Pitt said.

“About 14,300 vehicles currently use this intersection, with the number expected to grow by three per cent during the next five years."

Mr Pitt said Fulton Hogan had won the contract to undertake the upgrade.

"Works to relocate existing services has already begun near the intersection. The upgrade is expected to be well underway by the end of October and be complete by mid 2009," Mr Pitt said.

"Main Roads considered various options for the design of the intersection, including traffic signals, but after consultation with the community, council and adjacent landowners, a two-lane roundabout was selected as the most effective option."

The upgrade follows on from the new Dixon/Claymore Road interchange with the Sunshine Motorway, which was opened to traffic in July 2008.

Main Roads will continue to work closely with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to ensure the current upgrade works align with other local transport initiatives in the area.
