Minister tours Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula communities

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has begun a two-day tour of Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula communities.

During a visit to the region last June Ms Nelson-Carr gave an undertaking that she would return as soon as she could.

“It’s vital that I regularly get out into these remote areas to meet as many local people as possible,” she said.

“I look forward to again hearing from men, women and children living in the region as well as seeing first-hand some projects being put in place by Department of Communities staff for the benefit of local residents.”

As part of a wide-ranging itinerary, Ms Nelson-Carr will also officially open a new child care centre in New Mapoon.

Her tour includes visits to Horn, Badu, Saibai and Thursday Islands, as well as the mainland communities of Bamaga and New Mapoon.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the Bligh Government was committed to creating positive and sustainable change by building strong partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“This includes our efforts to work closely with Indigenous communities across the State to tackle alcohol misuse and its associated concerns.” she said.
