Queenslanders embrace Solar Bonus Scheme

Queensland households and small businesses are embracing a Bligh Government scheme offering rebates for surplus electricity generated by their roof-top solar systems.

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said approximately 350 customers had signed up for the Solar Bonus Scheme in its first two months since it began on 1 July 2008.

“The scheme offers 44 cents per kilowatt-hour for all surplus electricity generated by roof-top photovoltaic systems that is exported onto the Queensland electricity grid,” he said.

“The beauty of the scheme is that households and small businesses will save money on their electricity bills, save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“It will also help boost the State’s use of renewable energy, encourage energy efficiency and stimulate the solar power industry in Queensland.”

Mr Wilson said participating households and small businesses receive credits on their electricity bills for any additional power they generate for the grid.

“It’s estimated the scheme could save consumers more than 25 percent of their annual electricity bill, depending on how energy-efficient they are in their home.

“The take-up rate for the first two months of operation is very encouraging.

“I expect even more Queenslanders will be taking advantage of the bonuses when retailers report on the Scheme’s first six months of operations.”

Mr Wilson said the early results made a mockery of the Opposition’s claim that households would never generate enough electricity to receive a bonus.

“Based on preliminary data available, I am advised the vast majority of participating customers that have completed a billing cycle have received a Solar Bonus.”

Those wishing to claim the solar bonus should contact their electricity retailer to sign-up to participate in the scheme.
