Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Malone's got it wrong _ again.
Minister for Emergency Services, Neil Roberts today revealed an embarrassing blunder from the Opposition in Parliament this week.
Mr Roberts said during Question Time, the Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Ted Malone quoted FOI figures he said were released in NSW last week alleging ramping from bed shortages there was costing more than $100 million a year in ambulance staff overtime.
Mr Malone made the wild claims asserting that overtime costs in Queensland could be worse.
"Mr Malone stated that the figures showed $100 million in overtime was attributable to NSW ambulance crews waiting to get patients into their hospitals," Mr Roberts said.
"Mr Malone got it wrong, on every count.
"The figure relates to two different breakdowns of total overtime figures for the NSW ambulance service obtained from FOI documents but reported incorrectly by a newspaper last year, not last week.
"The total overtime bill for the NSW ambulance service in 2006/07 period was $ 52,015,310 _ almost half the figure the Member for Mirani states was found to be attributable just to ramping alone.
"In fact the figures were so wrong, that a memo was provided to media outlets at the time to alert them of the miscalculation that was being peddled.
"The Queensland Government continues to monitor the impact of ramping through off-stretcher times.
"Last financial year more than 76 per cent of patients were off-stretcher in less than 15 minutes, 86 per cent in less than 20 minutes and 93 per cent in less than 30 minutes."
"While the Member for Mirani is busy quoting figures from incorrect newspaper reports printed 12 months ago, the QAS is working pro-actively with Queensland Health to look after the health and welfare of Queenslanders.
"This is just another example of a lazy incompetent Opposition who think they can cruise into government next year without proper scrutiny."
