Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
New centre takes shape thanks to Blueprint funding
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt today led a delegation of Blueprint for the Bush partners to visit the construction site of the new Charters Towers community services hub, one of five similar centres being built around the state.
Mr Pitt said the $1 million in Blueprint for the Bush funding provided to the Charters Towers Neighbourhood Centre was a wise investment, not only in the Charters Towers region but for regional Queensland itself.
“The Queensland Government’s Blueprint for the Bush strategy aims to create liveable, prosperous and sustainable communities and with more than 150 initiatives currently underway, the future of rural and regional Queensland is in safe hands,” Mr Pitt said.
“Funding community organisations to build centres like this one in Charters Towers will aid the region to host a range of community events to help make the most of the town’s social spirit and cultural atmosphere.
“The Charters Towers community services hub is starting to take shape with construction anticipated to finish early next year.
“The Queensland Government provided more than $1 million to the Neighbourhood Centre to help it fulfill its mission of becoming the primary community services hub of Charters Towers.
“I’m pleased to say that they are already a long way towards achieving this goal and the establishment of the centre will only assist this further.
“I look forward to hearing about how well the centre is received by the Charters Towers community and learning more of the vital work that is being undertaken by local organisations to help make the region stronger and more vibrant.”
Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the centre would be an important multi-purpose public venue.
“The centre is a wonderful example of the Bligh Government’s commitment to building strong, supportive and inclusive communities right across the state,” she said.
Tenants will include Centacare and the Alcohol and Drug Foundation. The centre will also offer family violence and relationship counselling.
