The Honourable John Mickel
Export Week puts spotlight on opportunities in India
Queensland Export Week from 13 to 17 October will highlight India as a land of opportunity for the State’s export businesses, particularly in the mining, building and infrastructure sectors.
Minister for Trade John Mickel said that there is huge potential for Queensland’s mining technology and services industries to help meet demand for increased production in India’s mining and energy sectors.
“India is one of the world’s leading producers of bauxite, coal, iron ore, steel and zinc. The booming Indian economy has created increased demand for coking coal, necessary for India to sustain the huge growth of its industry and population,” Mr Mickel said.
“A number of State governments in India are offering investment incentives to private sector firms to develop mineral processing facilities and this means major opportunities for Queensland with our 100 years-plus experience in servicing mining industries.
Mr Mickel said that, during Export Week, Trade Queensland would be continuing to identify companies that would benefit from participating in the trade mission planned for November 2008. This would include India’s International Mining and Machinery Exhibition (IMME) from 2 to 8 November 2008.
“IMME is India’s largest mining exhibition, and the last biennial event in 2006, attracted 250 exhibitors from 15 countries and over 12,000 visitors. Australia holds Focus Country status for the IMME 2008 exhibition, offering a unique opportunity for Queensland firms to make contact with key representatives of the Indian mining sector.
Mr Mickel added that India’s building, construction and infrastructure sectors also represented an exciting new market for Queensland exporters. Construction is the largest Indian industry after agriculture and contributes around 7 per cent of India’s GDP. The sector is forecast to grow at a rate of over 10 per cent per annum for the next five years.
“Trade Queensland is also organising a Building and Construction Trade Mission to India from 18 to 24 October 2008, immediately following Export Week,” Mr Mickel said.
“This trade mission will promote Queensland's building and construction industry, our world-class niche products and services, particularly green building products as well as design, fit-out and construction opportunities in the booming building sector in India.
“It will include a visit to the CII - Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre in Hyderabad, attendance at BuildArch 2008 in Bangalore - India's international exhibition and conference on architecture, building and construction technology, materials, interiors and systems - and attending the International Conference on “Buildings of the Future: Architecture, Construction and Green Building”.
“Trade Queensland will exhibit at BuildArch 2008 to provide a platform for Queensland companies to network and promote themselves to a targeted audience,” Mr Mickel said.
The Indian real estate industry has grown at a rate of 30 percent over recent years, and is expected to grow at about 25 percent for the next three to four years. According to Austrade, the value of India’s real estate industry is expected to grow from US$48 billion in 2007 to US$140 billion by 2012.
Development of shopping malls and an acute shortage of office space, hotels and residential housing are some of the key drivers of this growth, as Indian consumer demand continues to rise.
Mr Mickel reminded Queensland Businesses that the Commissioners’ Events Across Queensland program during Export Week will include a visit to the Sunshine Coast by Mr Rod Solomons, Trade Commissioner India. The visit will include a seminar that will highlight export opportunities for Queensland businesses in India.
The Sunshine Coast event is to take place on 15 October from 10:30am to 12 noon. The venue is the Events Centre, 20 Minchinton Street, Caloundra. Local business people wishing to attend can book by telephoning 5437 1300 or email sunshine.coast@dtrdi.qld.gov.au. RSVPs are due by 10 October.
