New program leads the way to recovery from mental illness
Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced during Mental Health Week a new program to assist Brisbane people with a mental illness to get on the road to recovery.
Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the Resident Recovery Program would become a vital tool to help break the cycle between acute care, hostels and boarding houses, and homelessness.
“This program will lead the way in providing an individualised, flexible and responsive service designed to assist people with a mental illness recover and get their lives back on track,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Participants will have access to a wide range of services and supports, including help with practical life skills and developing links with their local community.
“It will develop an individual’s ability to move towards more stable and longer-term lifestyle arrangements.”
Nextt Health and New Farm Community Options will deliver the $1.2 million Resident Recovery Program in the Brisbane area.
Queensland Health will negotiate the referrals of people to service providers and work closely with them.
Member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace said the program was an important addition to the supports available to residents in recovery.
“It’s a really good initiative which aims to help people to drive their own recovery journey to be able to live and contribute positively to their community,” Ms Grace said.
New Farm Community Options will operate within the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Health Service District and Nextt Health within the Princess Alexandra Hospital Health Service District.
Ms Nelson-Carr said Disability Services Queensland would continue to work closely with the service providers and other stakeholders.
Nextt Health general manager Tanya Margetts said she was enthusiastic about the new program.
“We are excited by the prospect of providing the Resident Recovery Program to assist people with their recovery journey,” Ms Margetts said.
New Farm Community Options manager Sue Kavanagh said the program was an excellent opportunity to complement and extend current support services available to assist people with a mental illness in their recovery.
