School track and field stars race into state championships

Queensland’s next generation of athletics stars will be in the spotlight this week (9 to12 October) at the 19-years-and-under Commonwealth Bank Track and Field Championships at the State Athletic Centre, Nathan.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said some 1800 students from across Queensland would compete in 342 events over the four-day competition.

“The young athletics stars have been selected from hundreds of hopefuls to represent their region at this event,” Mr Welford said.

“Categories are also open to students with a disability so they have an opportunity to showcase their talents.”

Mr Welford congratulated the young athletes on their selection and wished them every success.

“It's a great experience for these students to compete at an elite level while meeting their peers from all around Queensland,” he said.

“I would also like to thank the dedicated teachers, school staff and parents who have contributed to ensuring the competition is a success.”

Mr Welford said the championships, long supported by the Commonwealth Bank, were the highlight of the athletics year for many young school students who exemplify the intent of the Government’s initiative in declaring 2008 as the Year of Physical Activity.

Students from all 12 sporting regions in Queensland— Metropolitan West, Metropolitan North, Metropolitan East, North West, South West, Wide Bay, Capricornia, Darling Downs, Northern, Peninsula, South Coast and Sunshine Coast—will compete in the
championships.
