School softball stars compete for state honours

More than 150 young Queensland softball stars will compete in state championships at Redlands later this week.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said students from across 12 regions would compete in the 12 Years-and-Under-Girls State Softball Championships at the Redlands softball grounds at Ormiston from 9 to 12 October.

"I'd like to congratulate all competitors for their achievement in representing their regions and wish them every success at the championships, especially in this Year of Physical Activity,” Mr Welford said.

“Each region will be represented by a team of 12 girls who will compete in the round-robin style competition.

“Each team will play eleven games over the four days of competition.

"This event offers a great opportunity for these young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.”

Twelve sporting regions—North West, South West, Peninsula, Northern, Capricornia, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast, South Coast, Darling Downs, Metropolitan East, Metropolitan West and Metropolitan North will be represented.

Mr Welford thanked the dedicated teachers and school staff who have worked hard in preparing these championships.

A state team consisting of 14 players will be selected to compete at the School Sport Australia Softball Exchange in Sydney from November 23-28.
