Apprentice scientists needed for Science on Saturday sessions in Proserpine

From learning how germs spread to building an alarm system, Proserpine kids are encouraged to take part in a new term of Science on Saturday sessions starting next month.

Minister for Regional Development and Industry Desley Boyle said the six-week program, delivered by CSIRO Education, would start on October 18 and give 7-14-year-olds a chance to have fun while they learn.

“The kids participate in real hands-on experiments which have them constructing, discovering and creating,” Ms Boyle said.

“We’re looking to the next generation to be inspired by the joy of learning how things work, exploring the world around them and making interesting discoveries.

“We hope some of these children may go on to pursue a career in science and further cement Queensland’s reputation as the Smart State.

“Activities include playing with glow-in-the-dark lotion and UV light to find out about how germs spread as well as building an alarm system and radio receiver to learn about the transformation and flow of energy through an electrical circuit.”

Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt said the program allowed youngsters to discover what it was like to be an apprentice scientist.

“The program shows young Queenslanders that science is not only exciting, but relevant in their everyday life,” Ms Jarratt said.

“Children are technology savvy and curious to explore new possibilities, something scientists do daily in their pursuit of new discoveries.”

Ms Jarratt said most of the 90-minute sessions included something to take home, and those attending all six would receive a CSIRO Double Helix Science Club magazine.

This year the topics are: Apprentice Scientist, Healthy Humans, Water Wise, Forensic Investigation, Working with DNA and Energy Expert.

Science on Saturday will be held at the Proserpine State High School. Junior sessions (7-10 years) are on from 10-11.30am and Senior sessions (11-14 years) from 12.30-2pm.
