Bligh backs Rocky Resource Expo
Rockhampton: The Bligh Government is backing Rockhampton’s biggest ever effort to showcase its mining and resources potential to national and international investors.
Premier Anna Bligh said tonight that the State Government will commit $40,000 to help the Rockhampton Regional Council stage QREX (Queensland Resources Expo) next year.
“Held over three days next July, QREX will be a celebration of the mining industry’s contribution to Central Queensland’s community and economy,” Ms Bligh said.
Ms Bligh, in the Beef Capital for this evening’s Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland Community Forum, said that in recent years mining and mineral processing developments had transformed Central Queensland into one of the nation’s economic powerhouse regions.
“This great region generates around 10 per cent of the State’s economic activity and around half the State’s electricity.
“It boasts 44 coal mines, 22 mineral mines, and 20 medium to large quarries producing products worth $AU15 billion dollars annually.
“Development like this is reflected within the community in terms of jobs, training opportunities, and community services and facilities.
“With trading resource giants India and China on Queensland’s doorstep, QREX is placing a stronger emphasis on attracting international delegations in 2009 and this is expected to net further long-term economic regional benefits,” she said.
Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle said while still proudly tagged as Australia’s beef capital, the region’s diversification was paying off.
“Located near the resource-rich Bowen basin, Rockhampton is actively positioning itself as a leading provider of services to the mining industry,” Ms Boyle said.
Member for Keppel Paul Hoolihan said that by embracing modern economic times, diversifying local industry, developing industry networks and consortiums, Rockhampton and the region was setting itself up for strong economic future.
“Manufacturing, engineering and industrial services have been identified by local industry under the Centres of Enterprise initiative as the growth industries of the future.
“By us developing strong mineral processing and light metals manufacturing industries the region adds value to the State’s rich mineral and energy resources sectors and helps attract further investment,” he said.
Ms Boyle said the three-day expo from 20-23 July 2009 would feature a range of integrated activities related to mining, minerals processing, and energy generation industries and would include a trade expo and industry networking events.
