Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
New safety fencing on Dawson Highway culvert
Main Roads is installing new pedestrian safety fencing near a Dawson Highway culvert in an effort to improve pedestrian safety in the area.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the fencing would be installed at Leixlip culvert, located approximately 500 metres west of Calliope on the Dawson Highway.
“The need for safety fencing at the culvert was investigated after the death of a pedestrian at the site early last month,” Mr Pitt said.
"Although the culvert complied with relevant design standards, these safety works will help to ensure that a tragedy like this is not repeated.”
Mr Pitt said improving the safety of the road environment was one of Main Roads' top priorities.
"The department is also carrying out inspections on similar structures in the region which are more than 1.5 metres high and located within one kilometre of semi-urban and urban areas.
“If pedestrian safety concerns are identified at these locations, they will be addressed."
The new safety fencing at Leixlip Creek is expected to be installed within two weeks, weather permitting.
