Over 10,000 apply for Redress: Minister
Applications for ex-gratia payments under the Redress Scheme for children in Queensland institutions closed this week.
Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said approximately 10,000 applications had been received as of this week’s deadline on Tuesday, September 30.
“The scheme was extended by three months in June because of the high level of interest and I wanted to ensure as many Queenslanders as possible had the opportunity to submit an application,” she said.
“When the scheme had originally closed, it had received 5,200 applications.
“During the three month extension, another 4,800 applications have come in.”
Applications are still being counted, with some mail still expected – all items post marked September 30 will be considered.
The Redress Scheme will offer Level 1 payments of $7,000 to eligible former residents of institutions who experienced abuse or neglect while in care.
A second payment of up to $33,000 will be available in cases where the evidence of abuse or neglect was more serious.
The Level 2 Assessment Panel was appointed in July and has met to establish processes for the assessments. Preliminary assessments have commenced, with payments expected to start mid next year.
