Bligh Government continues support for older men at risk: Minister
Minister for Communities Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced the Toowoomba Older Men’s Network will receive a funding boost, with another $56,600 per annum in funding over three following her visit to meet members of the organisation earlier this week.
The funding will help cover costs of the organisation which will soon move into its new home at the Bligh Government-funded Toowoomba Multi-Tenant Service Centre where refurbishment is nearing completion.
"With isolation and many other health and community support issues facing our older citizens, this organisation is doing an outstanding job supporting local residents and providing education and friendship," Ms Nelson-Carr said.
"Among the services it provides are weekly information seminars on topical issues like health matters and nutrition, as well as support and referrals to help residents tap into the links and supports that are available and they’re doing this in Toowoomba and many other areas around the State," she said.
"This additional funding will assist groups in Pittsworth, Crow’s Nest, Oakey, Roma, Tara, Goondiwindi, Mitchell and Dalby which currently involve something like 190 people.
"Up to 15 older men access the current support service on a daily basis, while others are contacted through home visits."
Member for Toowoomba North and Attorney General Kerry Shine welcomed the funding, saying the organisation has played a major part in helping some of our senior citizens turn their lives around.
"This extra funding help will take the pressure off of moving into the organisation’s new home, signalling a great opportunity for it to consolidate and expand its very good work,” Mr Shine said.
"The Toowoomba Multi-Tenant Service Centre is an important partnership between the Bligh Government, the men’s support group, the Advocacy Support Centre and the East Creek Neighbourhood Centre, giving people a handy, one-stop shop access to an extensive range of support and information services from the one convenient location," he said.
