José Carreras performs with TQO in another Queensland exclusive
Arts Minister Rod Welford today announced another exclusive cultural event for Queensland, with internationally renowned opera star José Carreras to appear in concert with The Queensland Orchestra (TQO) next year.
Speaking at the launch of The Queensland Orchestra’s 2009 Season, Mr Welford said Carreras would join the Orchestra for a performance at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre (BEC) on 6 February 2009.
“Off the back of the hugely successful Andy Warhol and Picasso exhibitions at GoMA and the announcement of the Paris Opera Ballet’s exclusive performances at QPAC - this is another cultural coup for Queensland,” Mr Welford said.
“José Carreras is one of the most distinguished opera stars of the modern era and is best known as one of The Three Tenors who, alongside Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, put opera on pop charts across the world.
“His decision to appear in concert with The Queensland Orchestra is testament to the Orchestra’s growing international reputation for lyrical, fluent performances under the leadership of Chief Conductor Maestro Johannes Fritzsch.”
Mr Welford said the Orchestra would also play with another super star, Roberta Flack, at the BEC on 4 February 2009, just two days before its concert with José Carreras.
Flack’s haunting ballads, Killing Me Softly and Jesse, were anthems for the Baby Boomers before being covered by Lauryn Hill and the Fugees and Puff Daddy to become hit songs for generations X and Y.
“This has been Maestro Fritzsch’s first year with The Queensland Orchestra and it has been a standout 12 months, with the company enjoying success with both critics and at the box office,” Mr Welford said.
“With these two performances alongside international stars, and a full program celebrating the anniversaries of Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn, as well as mixing the Orchestra’s classical repertoire with cabaret, movie themes and dance music, 2009 is shaping up to be even more successful.
“Our Government is one of the Orchestra’s strongest supporters, partnering with the Australia Council to provide $9 million annually toward the company’s performing and touring program.”
Subscriptions to The Queensland Orchestra’s 2009 Season are now on sale through QTIX on 136 246. For further information visit www.thequeenslandorchestra.com.au
