Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Call for tenders for Farrellys Lane intersection near Mackay
An $8.4 million upgrade the Farrellys Lane and the Bruce Highway intersection near Mackay moved a step closer today with Queensland Main Roads calling for tenders for the project.
"The upgrade includes provisions for two additional lanes and the installation of traffic lights at the intersection, two kilometres south of Mackay City Gates," Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Mr Albanese said.
"The Australian Government has committed $50 million for works on the Bruce Highway between Bakers Creek and City Gates."
Queensland Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the upgrade was of vital importance to industries in the Mackay/Whitsunday Region.
"This intersection is of strategic importance-the improvements will provide better and safer access to the expanding industrial area of Paget, and the new residential areas on the western side at Ooralea," Mr Pitt said.
"It will also improve safety for through traffic moving along the Bruce Highway."
Mr Pitt highlighted Main Roads' extensive public consultation in the lead up to the upgrades, as further evidence of its commitment to engage with the local community on road improvements.
"This project is a shining example of our commitment to delivering better roads and connecting Queensland," Mr Pitt said.
"By focusing our efforts on building a safe and efficient transport network, we are securing the continued growth and prosperity of the Mackay/Whitsunday Region."
Tenders for the works will close on October 30 and the project is scheduled to commence early in 2009.
