Brisbane Cabaret Festival swings into town
Internationally-renowned artists will bring the excitement of contemporary cabaret to Brisbane from tomorrow for the eighth annual HLB Mann Judd Brisbane Cabaret Festival.
Arts Minister Rod Welford said this year’s festival (1-11 October) would be the largest in its history, celebrating contemporary cabaret at various venues across inner Brisbane over 11 days.
“The Brisbane Cabaret Festival is a popular event on our city’s cultural calendar, having developed a reputation for delivering distinguished artists and innovative programming to celebrate cabaret in all its forms,” Mr Welford said.
“This year two State Government venues will take centre stage at the festival for the first time, with the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) being transformed into the glamorous Crystal Room and Gem Saloon to match the event’s eclectic and exotic feel.
“Performances will also take place at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Fortitude Valley, as well as venues at South Bank, West End and Woolloongabba as part of the Cabaret on the Fringes program.
“Festival highlights include the pairing of recording stars Christine Anu and Deni Hines in Taking It To The Streets and a performance based on the works of iconic Canadian poet, novelist and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen.
“Special guests include African-born, French-raised singer-songwriter Tété, popular Australian musical comedy act Tripod and emerging local performer Emma Dean.
“Children will also be able to experience this year’s festival at Kabaret for Kids, a hilarious spin on the well-loved children’s song There was an Old Lady who swallowed a fly.”
The Queensland Government contributed $50,000 in annual funding to the 2008 Brisbane Cabaret Festival through Arts Queensland’s small to medium arts sector (s2m) funding initiatives, to foster community engagement and participation, provide regional access and support the development and employment of artists and arts workers.
