Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
South Eastern Region welcomes new Assistant Commissioner
Police on the Gold Coast have welcomed their new leader, Assistant Commissioner Paul Wilson, following his first week as the South Eastern Region’s top police officer.
Police Minister Judy Spence said Assistant Commissioner Wilson’s 34-years experience with the Queensland Police Service makes him the perfect choice to lead one of Queensland’s fastest growing and most challenging police regions.
“The Gold Coast – Logan region is one of the fastest growing corridors in Queensland,” Ms Spence said.
“It is also the centrepiece of the state’s tourism industry – attracting big ticket events such as Indy and Schoolies.
“This represents unique challenges for policing in the region, which AC Wilson is well-equipped to handle.
“AC Wilson began his career as a Police Cadet in 1974, and has served throughout Queensland at both metropolitan and rural Criminal Investigation Branches.
“He spent six years as Inspector in Charge of the Fortitude Valley Police District. This experience will be extremely valuable when tackling the challenges of policing the Gold Coast’s popular nightclub strip.
“Most recently Mr Wilson has served as AC in the Northern Region where he showed great leadership for the region, which stretches from Ingham and Mornington Island to Birdsville.
“Our ACs play an essential role in guiding the direction of policing throughout our police regions and commands.
“AC Wilson is a fine example of the calibre of officers we have in the QPS, demonstrating high levels of integrity, professionalism and diligence at all times.
“I welcome AC Wilson to the South Eastern Region and look forward to working with him in his new role,” Ms Spence said.
Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said Assistant Commissioner Wilson was perfectly positioned to lead police in the South Eastern Region.
“Assistant Commissioner Wilson has the broad skill set and wealth of experience that is typical of the leadership within the QPS. He is a leader with the capability to set a strategic agenda for the region and to drive that agenda forward.
“This position was previously occupied by former Assistant Commissioner Melville and I thank him for his outstanding efforts in the South Eastern Region. I would also like to thank Chief Superintendent Paul Taylor who filled the role of Acting Assistant Commissioner so admirably prior to this appointment,” Commissioner Atkinson said.
Assistant Commissioner Wilson said he was looking forward to life in South Eastern Region.
“With the beach and the outdoor lifestyle, the Gold Coast is one of the best places in the world to live. My wife, Angela and I, are really loving it here,” Assistant Commissioner Wilson said.
“I believe the key to effective policing is to provide the officers with sound leadership and empower them to do the job.
“Police will continue to take a tough stance against crime in this region.”
