The Honourable Warren Pitt

Peak Downs Highway upgrade to improve safety

Upgrade works will start next month (October) to improve safety along an 8.1-kilometre section of the Peak Downs Highway at Myall Creek.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said $8.75 million would be invested into upgrading the section, located about 22 kilometres north-east of Clermont.

"This rehabilitation and widening project will improve the road structure to provide an 8.5-metre sealed road with safer, smoother conditions for motorists," Mr Pitt said.

"The Peak Downs Highway is part of Queensland's strategic road network and is used to connect Clermont and the Central Highlands with Mackay.

"It is a vital link for freight, the Bowen Basin mining industry and tourism from Mackay and the Central Highlands, so it's important we continue to maintain and improve this road."

About 512 vehicles travel along this section of highway each day, of which 22 per cent are heavy vehicles.

“This is another example of Main Roads meeting its commitment to improve safety for motorists across Queensland's regional road network," Mr Pitt said.

"I urge motorists to observe changed traffic conditions and obey instructions of roadworkers and signage throughout the project to stay safe.”

Main Roads will continue to work closely with stakeholders as the project progresses. RoadTek, Main Roads’ construction arm, will undertake the upgrade works that are due for completion by mid 2009, weather permitting.
