Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Unnamed Creek and Kratzman’s Gully bridges replaced

Two new concrete bridges are under construction near Murgon as part of a Main Roads’ initiative to accelerate the replacement of highly trafficked wooden bridges across southern Queensland.

The bridges at Unnamed Creek and Kratzman’s Gully are located about 20-kilometres north of Murgon on the Murgon-Gayndah Road.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the upgrade would include replacing the existing timber structures with reinforced concrete bridges.

“Murgon-Gayndah Road carries a large volume of freight traffic, which has a significant impact on the older timber bridges and requires ongoing maintenance,” Mr Pitt said.

“By replacing the bridges with reinforced concrete structures, not only are we reducing future maintenance costs, but also conserving the precious timber resources currently used to maintain the wooden bridges.

“The approaches to these bridges will also be upgraded as part of the project to help improve driver visibility and safety.”

Disruption to travellers during the works will be minimal. Motorists will use a two-lane sidetrack around the site, where speed will be reduced to 60km/h to protect the safety of motorists and construction workers.

Works on both bridges and their approaches should be completed by the end of 2008, weather permitting.

The bridge replacements at Unnamed Creek and Kratzman's Gully form part of the $126.5 million Southern Queensland Accelerated Road Rehabilitation Program (SQARRP).

SQARRP is a Main Roads' initiative that aims to accelerate the replacement of 31 bridges throughout southern Queensland – including 11 in the Burnett region – to better meet current and future freight demands.

“These bridges have been selected on the basis of their location on key transportation routes, current condition and potential future usage,” Mr Pitt said.

“Six bridges have been successfully replaced in the Burnett Region already, with five more under construction.

“All salvageable timber from these bridge replacement works will be given to RoadTek, Main Roads’ construction arm, to conduct repairs on remaining timber bridges around southern Queensland.”
