Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Logan parents and carers update and learn work skills

Sixty Logan parents and carers returning to the workforce have been given the opportunity to update or gain new skills thanks to $90,000 of Queensland Government funding supported under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said participants will receive job preparation assistance including training and practical work experience in the retail, information technology, book keeping, reception, and hospitality fields.

“The project is an example of the Queensland Government helping to address important issues facing jobseekers, industry and the wider community,” Mr Mickel said.

“This is a valuable chance for parents and carers entering employment to skill up for today’s work expectations, especially for those who have been out of the workforce for an extended period.

“These participants have a lot to offer the workforce and the addition of 60 skilled workers will be greatly appreciated by local business experiencing skills and labour shortages.

“The project also offers personal development assistance ensuring participants are prepared with communication skills, self confidence, conflict resolution skills and motivation improving prospects of attaining and maintaining meaningful employment.”

The Spot Community Services Ltd President Kenneth Houliston said as part of the 12-month project participants will visit the Fitted for Work boutique in Fortitude Valley which provides women seeking work the opportunity to practice interview situations in a suitable outfit which they can later borrow for job interviews.

“Additionally we will work with participants to improve resume writing, presentation and job seeking skills,” Mr Houliston said.

“Throughout the year The Spot will provide training in real-work skills which participants can build upon within employment or in further training.

“Training will cover Microsoft software, basic MYOB, working in culturally diverse environments, working with colleagues and customers, work place health and safety, stock ordering, food and beverage preparation, basic numeracy and maintaining petty cash.”

During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
