Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Safety the key for major Logan intersection
Greater signal visibility, an anti-skid treatment and improved line markings are just some of the features of a safety upgrade commencing this month at the Kingston Road and Paradise Road intersection at Slacks Creek.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the $450,000 project would greatly benefit commuters and the local community.
“More than 39,000 motorists now use this road every day, so this upgrade is vital to ensure this intersection continues to be as safe as possible,” Mr Pitt said.
“Vehicles approaching the intersection will soon notice new LED (light-emitting diodes) signals, which greatly improve visibility while reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and maintenance costs.
“A new anti-skid treatment will also be installed at the intersection to help motorists stop safely in all kinds of weather.”
Member for Woodridge Desley Scott welcomed the intersection safety improvements.
“Kingston and Paradise Roads are both extremely busy roads, especially during peak times,” Ms Scott said.
“This upgrade will help to ensure that motorists can pass through this intersection as safely as possible, even with increasing traffic volumes.
“It is good to see Main Roads taking action to ensure our community’s roads remain safe.”
Member for Waterford Evan Moorhead said he was pleased to see a modification of the intersection layout had also been included in the upgrade plans.
“Regular users of this intersection know there is often a safety issue due to vehicles taking the left-turn lane from Paradise Road into Kingston Road too fast,” Mr Moorhead said.
“The upgrade will see the left-turn lane from Paradise Road being modified, resulting in vehicles reducing speed when turning the corner.
“This change will ensure that people have enough time to take adequate notice of oncoming vehicles on Kingston Road before making lane changes after the turn.”
Mr Pitt said these intersection improvements were just one part of Main Roads’ ongoing commitment to deliver safer and improved roads.
“Safety is our number one priority,” Mr Pitt said.
“Main Roads has already spent $2.6 million on safety works and intersection upgrades throughout the Brisbane and Ipswich region since July.
“A further $10.4 million will be invested in improvements by the end of the 2008-09 financial year to help keep our roads as safe as possible.”
Works at the Kingston and Paradise Road intersection are expected to be completed by late November 2008, weather permitting.
