Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Demolition of Atherton Fire Station residence
The demolition of the former firefighters’ residence at Atherton Fire Station will begin tomorrow.
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said it is an important step forward for staff and families in Atherton.
“Extensive environmental testing cleared the residence of any connection to the incidence of cancer at the station,” Mr Roberts said.
“However, staff raised this issue as a matter of importance and the Government has acted.
“The house itself was built in 1959, but hasn’t been used for the last seven years.
“A group has been engaged to demolish the house. That group has been advised of the testing into the residence and will be conduct the demolition in accordance with all environmental standards.
In July, Mr Roberts announced that the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service had important plans for the space the residence currently sits on.
“Once demolition is complete, QFRS will use the area for training, equipment testing and vehicle access.
“Its pleasing that something positive can come out of an extremely difficult time for the station’s staff and their families.”
