Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

Spence encourages residents to check out Reid Park designs online

Sport Minister Judy Spence said plans outlining the design of the new Reid Park V8 Race Precinct have now gone live on the Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation website – providing members of the public with a great idea of what the track will look like.

Ms Spence said: “The Reid Park redevelopment will be a great asset for the people of Townsville, both as a motor racing precinct and as a community green space.

“These plans demonstrate how Reid Park will be transformed into a facility Townsville can be proud of and I’m pleased the community now has the opportunity to see just how great it will be.

“The track design has received praise from a number of top V8 drivers.

“The circuit features tight turns which will provide for more passing opportunities, better competition and more exciting racing for spectators.

“The Townsville track will be a favourite among drivers, with the fast flowing circuit providing them the opportunity to display their range of tactical and driving skills.”

Current V8 Supercar Champion, Garth Tander, has congratulated the project team on coming up with a design that will impress both drivers and fans.

“The pit lane and pit building is in a perfect location and there’s heaps of room for the fans to get around the inside and outside of the track,” Garth Tander said.

Former Bathurst winners, Steve Richards and Russell Ingall said the drivers are looking forward to racing on the new track.

“I think this track has the ingredients for close racing and good passing,” Steve Richards said.

Former V8 Supercar Champion Russell Ingall said: “I could easily speak on behalf of all the drivers to say that we will make sure this race is a huge success and an integral part of the Championship. Townsville will be a focal point of the Championship and the country that weekend.”

Steven Johnson has also joined the chorus of drivers looking forward to driving the Townsville circuit.

“In terms of the finished product I really think it will be one of the better tracks for passing and from what I have seen first-hand, a very spectator friendly track.”

Member for Townsville Mike Reynolds said this initial praise for the track design from top V8 drivers is a great indication of how successful the Townsville 400 V8 Supercar event will be.

“This will not only be an exciting car race – it will be a major community event,” Mr Reynolds said.

“I know the people of Townsville will be just as excited as the drivers are to see how the Reid Park precinct is going to take shape, and I look forward to watching the transformation in the months ahead.”

Ms Spence said the Townsville V8 Supercar event will be a must see spectacle, both on and off the track.

“The Queensland Government is providing more than $14M into the $29.58M project to construct the Townsville Reid Park precinct and is the contributor of the largest portion of funds.

“With Leighton Contractors, Northern Region now selected as the successful tender, this project is moving full steam ahead, in preparation for the inaugural event next July.”

The plans are available for viewing at www.sportrec.qld.gov.au under the features link titled ‘Townsville 400 V8 Supercar Precinct’ – and are also available for viewing on the Townsville City Council website.
